NFL WEEKEND PREVIEW

I really wanted to a deep dive into ddfantasyfootball.com’s pass catching tool called the Trinity Tracker, but I don’t have a ton of time to dive in.

It truly is one of the best fantasy football tool out there for the wide receiver and tight end positions. It takes into account fantasy points per game along with target share to give the Trinity score.

Aka how much a given player is utilized within their own offensive environment. A player can have all the talent in the world but if they aren’t seeing usage within the offense then they likely won’t have sustainable fantasy football success.

Look at JSN (top right). PPR points per game at nearly 30 through seven weeks and being utilized more often and more consistently than any receiver in the NFL.

Trinity Score via DD Fantasy Football

I’m not being paid to promote this; it’s just a great tool for deciding which players to buy and sell throughout the season. It helps quite a bit with lineups as well, allowing you to compare up to three players and their Trinity usage over multiple or specific weeks.

I’ll try to do a dive in later in the season, maybe before fantasy playoffs.

Let’s get to the upcoming week.

The NFL has a banger of a week with six matchups between teams at or above .500, including two matchups between 5-win teams.

Let’s start with THE matchup of the season.

Broncos vs Chiefs.

Two teams with vastly different west coast experiences in Week 7 go toe-to-toe in a game that could help decide the AFC West. With the Raiders losers of four in a row and the Chargers starring down the barrel of 0-7 this week, these are the only two teams with a shot to win it.

KC started the season with a huge Monday Night Football win in Week 1 against Denver, so they own the tiebreaker for now. A win on Sunday for Denver ties up the top of the division. Broncos will technically be a half game up because they haven’t had their bye week yet but more or less tied.

Broncos EDGE Jonathan Cooper was back in Week 7 after a 6-week stint on the NFL’s Commissioner Exempt list while on trial for domestic violence allegations. Not a great look in my opinion. It’s looking like Pat Surtain II could return as well after logging a full practice on Wednesday. I don’t need to say how impactful it will be to have the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year back before the biggest game of the season.

And then there’s the news out of Kansas City surrounding second-year offensive tackle Josh Simmons, who was kicked out of a locker room meeting after a screaming match with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. Two guys in that organization you simply can NOT scream at. I’d be surprised if he plays another down for the Chiefs. He’s currently out until Week 11 on injured reserve at minimum.

OH YEAH. They also signed a sexual predator (alleged). #BelieveWomen

Justin Tucker signed with the Chiefs’ practice squad this week. He hasn’t kicked since 2024 and he served a 10-game suspension after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct towards massage therapists. Pretty gross.

GREAT SEGWAY. Let’s talk Browns-Steelers.

Deshaun Watson (also a weird massage therapist sexual predator) has the Browns 5-2 atop the AFC North. Cleveland has a very young squad with an incredible defense. They are a legit playoff team, and they are going to be around for awhile. They are seriously talented, but they also haven’t beaten a single good team… except the Steelers.

Those Steelers have a much shorter window for success. This is Aaron Rodgers’ last season, something I’m sure many people reading this are grateful for. Between him and Matthew Stafford nearing the end of their careers, it really feels like the end of an era for QBs with elite accuracy and perfect line of scrimmage management. From diagnosing defenses to getting everyone aligned and on time, Rodgers is a true master of the craft. I’m going to miss him as a football player.

I don’t necessarily believe in the Steelers. I might actually pick the Browns for this game, I’m undecided right now. (Scroll down)

Winner of this game will take a firm lead in the AFC North. It’s going to be an electric 16-13 final, I can’t wait!

The real battle in the AFC is in Baltimore as Lamar Jackson returns to take on the Buffalo Bills in what very well could be an AFC Championship game preview.

Baltimore has fallen a bit with Jackson banged up, so I’m thankful he’ll be back to take on former league MVP Josh Allen. It’s kind of funny hyping up the QB matchup when they don’t actually play against each other on the football field.

But alas, this is going to be one of those games you’re going to want to watch start to finish.

The other two games are both on the NFC side.

And they are both in prime time.

Panthers (3-3) and Packers (4-3) on Thursday Night Football. Both of these teams are coming off bad losses. Carolina got throttled by Tampa Bay at home, and Green Bay lost a tough division game they could’ve easily won.

Bears (5-2) at Seahawks (4-3) on Monday Night Football. Two of the best teams in the entire NFC go head to head in what could be an NFC Championship game preview. Both teams are coming off huge prime time wins against top tier AFC opponents, so I think this game has the potential to be the most entertaining game all weekend.

Watching Caleb Williams try to pick apart the NFL’s top defense which just held Patrick Mahomes and KC to 3 total points is going to be must-see TV.

I’ve talked about Nick Emmanwori on here before, but I have to shout him out again. The second-year safety for Seattle helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl in his rookie season and now he’s lining up along the defensive line as an EDGE RUSHER. He truly is one of the most rare specimens of football player we’ve ever seen in the league.

WEEK 7 NFL POWER RANKINGS

I think it’s INSANE that the Minnesota Vikings, led by Kyler Murray, are the NFL’s last remaining team.

I had them winning 5 games all year.

I don’t want them at #1, but what am I supposed to do? San Fran got beat by 2-win Atlanta. Kansas City got embarrassed in Seattle.

My hands are tied. Their defense is THAT good.

Speaking of, my #15 and #16 teams are the Browns and Rams. It feels disrespectful not to have the 5-2 Browns represented. But they also haven’t played anyone. And I don’t know if they are better than the LA Rams. They likely aren’t But for the sake of you complainers and the fact it’s only Week 8, I’ll leave LA off the list… for now.

  1. Minnesota Vikings (6-0, W 16-10 vs Colts) ⬆2

  2. Buffalo Bills (5-1, BYE) ⬆2

  3. San Francisco 49ers (6-1, L 20-29 at Falcons) ⬇2

Teams on BYE: Texans, Saints, Giants, 49ers

Game of the Week: Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions — This week is loaded in terms of great matchups. Prime time games are mostly good, with the exception of Sunday Night Football. But this game stands out to me above the rest because there are multiple undefeated things happening here. The Vikings are 6-0 like I mentioned earlier. The Lions are at home for this game where they haven’t lost all season. Something has to give. If Kevin O’Connell can’t figure out how to execute good offense against a severely banged up Lions secondary, is he really the offensive guru people claim him to be. We know what he’s done with Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones, but we’ve yet to see that from Murray. We never saw it with JJ McCarthy in Minnesota, and now he’s playing well for the New York Giants. I think for both teams in this matchup, there are more questions than answers despite strong records. I personally don’t see either of these teams as realistic Super Bowl contenders, but maybe this game will change my mind.

Side bar, is there a world in which O’Connell is at risk of being fired? I think so. The team is undefeated but they have the league’s top coordinator dominating the defensive side of the ball. At what point, if the offense continues to struggle, does Vikings’ brass say “you know what, let’s put Brian Flores in charge?” Minnesota’s next four games are against Detroit, Buffalo, Green Bay, and San Francisco. All teams with winning records. It wouldn’t surprise me if this 6-0 Vikings team becomes a 6-4 Vikings team. This really only happens if they don’t improve offensively. I can’t put it into words how dominant this defense is under Flores. They are blitzing opposing QBs at an all-time rate. 71 percent of the time!! The league average is 31 percent. They blitzed the Colts 85.7 percent of the time last week. WILD! They allow just over 180 yards per game and have given up a league low three defensive touchdowns. They give up 12.3 points per game. That’s 5 points lower than the second-best defense.
